Today more than ever, architecture is divided between superficial, resigned architects who believe that pampering capital and clients is the only available option if they want to stay in business and those nervous artists, hermetical and unintelligible, who are already in need of curators and selectors to clear their way through life on the other side. This schism has made architecture an ephemeral and frustrating business, and it is high time the architect is granted clear vision of goals and effective means to achieve them.
The first step in defining new strategies should involve making an inventory of the existing knowledge and state of affairs of the moment. I believe this is what the Croatian Pavilion is doing at the Venice Biennal; it is an ingenious and accurate inventory of architectural issues, knowledge and tools put together in a “passage machine”.
